Following a public tender process, EC3 Networks - a 100% daughter company of the compentence centre EC3 - was awarded with a contract for the new implementation of the Country Portal for Finnish Tourism. The implementation of the portal will be carried out by a consortium consisting of EC3 Networks, Siemens PSE, Tiscover, eCTRL solutions, and Lixto. The same consortium already successfully realised the tourism portal for Europe (visiteurope.com).

The new Finnish Tourism Portal shall be a worldwide visiting card for Finland and make Finland even more attractive as tourism destination.
"E-commerce has evolved from mere online presence over online transactions to CRM, and lastly to consumer driven markets. Consumers are becoming active, defining products and services. This also shows that e-commerce is not just business, consumer want and should have fun.
In this development travel & tourism has maintained its position as one of the leading e-commerce areas. In Europe 80 % of hotels have web sites and, in online sales have steady growth rates between 20 % and 50%. Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) were among the first to use the Internet, already in the mid 90s. However, one can also observe problems, especially with respect to online transactions. A crucial issue is the identification of a successful business model, taking into consideration legal constraints.
But destinations have advantages: they have a unique, not exchangeable brand; they are trusted partners for networking; and they have experience in information management and delivery. The crucial issue is to maintain an independent position in the e-market, based on a distinctive brand, and to enable access to the e-market for all suppliers within a destination (not just "cherry picking" with few strong suppliers). But DMOs have to provide added value for both suppliers and users.
The Finnish Tourism Portal responds to these challenges with some outstanding features:
With these features Finland will underline its role as a market leader, compared to other destinations. But one should remember, that the real challenge concerns not the design and development, but the organisational implementation and operation of the portal, and the maintenance of a high-level know how needed in a permanently changing market."
